Though I don't know of any way to turn off these effects...

Are you on Vista? Maybe that explain the difference in screenshots that we had? As it depends on the OS.

it figures that Pokke has an eye (or two!) for that sort of thing - he's an artist, after all...

I've been dealing with anti-aliasing ever since I started working for TV. That was in 1989. Looks like it finally pays off!   Grin

Did anyone see the first half of the MS Keynote tonight? I missed it. I guess they showed Windows 7... just wondered if I missed anything cool.

I haven't, but supposedly Windows 7 was going to be their "big" thing at CES.  I'll watch it tonight...

Heh, I want one as well.  I could actually see myself doing some old-fashioned Basic coding deep into the night, like in the old days, with my Atari 8-bit and Commodore 64...  Grin

Microsoft's "Morro" is now in beta for the first 75,000 people to sign up. That's their new free antivirus package. Official name is Microsoft Security Essentials, but "Morro" is more fun.

Huh, interesting.  I just put the free AVG on a system (that had had Kaspersky, which was causing all kind of trouble for me), and I like it--it's fast, unobtrusive, and, well, free!  I wonder how this Morro will stand up.

Hee, "Morro" is the name of an ancient Spanish castle/fortress overlooking San Juan bay  (full name:  "Castillo de San Felipe Del Morro").  Microsoft has a pretty heavy corporate presence in PR (up to a few years back, they even manufactured Xbox game discs and Microsoft Office discs down here, in Aguadilla) so maybe that's where they got the name.

It's all over the tech news but just in case... Firefox 3.5 was released today.

Haven't tested it, but it's supposed to be a lot faster when it comes to running Javascript (it compiles the script on the fly), as well as support for HTML 5 and some other internal stuff.

Externally, the tab interface has changed a bit and makes for a more consistent browsing experience.

Of course, some add-ons aren't compatible yet...

This is maybe more geeky gossip, but I saw Laura Foy at the MIX10 Keynote today... and she isn't aging well. Too much time in the sun!

Tina Wood.

Gossip aside, the demos for the Windows Phone 7 OS were pretty impressive. My next phone might be a Windows phone!!

I mean c'mon, Netflix movies on your phone? How cool is that?

You know, I'm really torn about all the cool stuff showing up on smartphones these days.  I personally have a BlackBerry with business apps, but I have my share of fun stuff as well.  I am jealous about the tons of cool stuff for iphone and even Android these days.

So why am I against tons of cool stuff?  Because it seems every idiot is using that cool stuff while driving, making it even more dangerous on the road these days.  Last night, there was a car driving in the middle of 2 lanes, and we could see him/her looking up something on their phone, for about 2m this car was in between lanes.  I've had to honk and yell at people who don't go on greens because something on their phone detracted them.

I'd love some universal feature on all cars and phones that only allow phone calls through dedicated Bluetooth or hands-free devices for the driver, so they can focus on driving rather than watching youtube on their phone.

We definitely need more bans in place, that's for sure. Talking on a cell phone while driving is banned in a few states, but txting and/or fiddling with one needs to be banned even more. Tickets! We need to start ticketing these people heavily!

Yeah, talking and/or texting while driving is against the law here in CA.  But from what I've seen, very few people care.  I think the first fine is $20, and it doesn't even count against your insurance, so there's very little incentive to buy a nice Bluetooth device for $50+, just hope you don't get caught.

I think I've mentioned this topic here in the Pub before too because people using mobile phones while driving frustrates me beyond belief. It's illegal here in Australia too, and we have even had graphic tv advertising campaigs despicting the possible consequences (of drinking, drugs, mobile use, etc). While similar campaigns for drink driving have been effective I'm yet to see any effect on people using mobiles. Maybe the police have stats that prove I'm wrong but I see people all the time on their phones.

My brother-in-law is a cop who worked in accident investigation for a while and the things he has seen would be enough for everyone to think again before even placing their phone within reach while in the drivers seat. Our ad campaigns, I believe, are based on these police files and often depict what happens to the human body on impact in a vehicle. And still people don't care.

I just think think people shouldn't be allowed access to their phone while driving at all.

But that's so broad a generalization. My phone is my mp3 payer... so a law like that would mean I couldn't listen to music? I mean, I don't fiddle with it while I'm driving, but I am using it in that it's in a cradle playing audio at me. Looking over at the radio flipping channels or changing CD's is just as dangerous, it's just that people don't do it constantly.

So it's a tricky balance, but definitely it just seems like "If a cop sees you focusing on a device in your hand rather than on driving he ought to be able to fine you." should cover things nicely. Smiley Really it doesn't matter if it's your cell phone or a gameboy or ... heck, anything.
